One of Australia’s most successful sporting teams somehow didn’t have a sponsor. We were challenged to help the country know who they are & as a result, get them sponsored.
Despite being one of Australia's most successful and decorated national sporting teams—holding a #2 world ranking, multiple Paralympic gold medals, and the title of defending World Champions—the Australian Steelers wheelchair rugby team faces a significant challenge. They are entering a major competition period without a team sponsor. This highlights a critical disconnect in the competitive sponsorship landscape: immense on-court success and a powerful, values-driven story do not automatically translate into corporate partnership. The team represents a proven, high-performance asset that is currently undervalued and overlooked by brands, creating a unique opportunity for a partner to align with a world-class, resilient team that consistently overcomes adversity to win.
To confront the sponsorship challenge head-on, the Steelers launched the 'Officially Unsponsored' campaign, a bold and innovative strategy to find the right partner. The team has ditched its iconic green and gold uniforms for minimalist, all-white 'blank canvas' kits. In the very place a major sponsor's logo would traditionally sit, the jerseys feature a QR code. Scanning the code leads potential sponsors to the 'SponsorSHOP,’ a purpose-built digital marketplace. Here, brands can browse and directly engage with a curated range of sponsorship opportunities, from naming rights and apparel partnerships to event collaborations. This proactive, transparent approach transforms the team jersey into a direct sales channel, putting the power back in the athletes' hands.
The campaign created a powerful moment by putting the Steelers directly in the 'shop window' for corporate Australia, showcasing their value and progressive mindset.
